Discovery course of packaging recycling and waste management in Belgium

Training programme – Introduction

Belgium is the European leader in recycling packaging, especially, with 87.4% of its domestic packaging waste recycled. The ban on importing millions of tons of plastic waste by the Chinese government is an opportunity for Europe to develop its own infrastructure and create a circular economy in plastics.

EU nations and European Parliament reached an agreement to set a legally-binding target to recycle 55 percent of plastic packaging waste by 2030. Pressure is growing for each European member state to ensure the recovery and recycling of several plastics waste in the most economically efficient and ecologically sound way.

Our country is on the cutting edge of technology in this area and invests in state-of-the-art sorting units combining the latest technical innovations such as optical sorting, air and ballistic separators for sorting up to 15 plastic streams (black plastics,…).
