On Wednesday the 15th of July, the European Alliance for Apprenticeships hosted a High Level Expert Live Discussion along with the Commissioner Nicolas for Jobs and Social Rights, to mark the launch of a renewed Alliance to drive forward apprenticeships in Europe.
Commissioner Schmit was joined by Anja Karliczek, Germany’s Federal Minister for Education and Research and Hubertus Heil, Germany’s Federal Minister for Labour and Social Affairs.
Together, they emphasised the commitment of the newly formed German Council Presidency towards supporting provision of vocational education and training (VET). A focus on apprenticeships and the need to expand the availability of digital education and training in order to make VET more accessible and widespread was stressed.
Three panels explored the roles of different stakeholder groups in building quality apprenticeships in Europe. Specifically, the panel discussions addressed:
- The role of businesses and apprentices
- The role of regions, chambers and VET providers
- The role of social partners
Overall, the speaker’s welcomed the European Commission’s proposal for a renewed Alliance, which was seen as an additional step towards unleashing the full potential of apprenticeships.
